The ViewSheffield Review
Upmarket cafe from experienced Sheffield restaurateurs.
The Venue
Thyme Cafe stands on Glossop Road, a busy main route running from Sheffield’s hospital and university district out to the west of the city centre. The surrounding area, Broomhill, is primarily occupied by students but is also popular with many young professionals and former students who continue to enjoy the area’s cosmopolitan atmosphere.
As for Thyme itself, an unassuming and easily missed shop front exterior houses a cosy, rustic style cafe, though a good number of modern features are apparent.
The People
Thyme, as the name suggests, is a cafe operating without the need for reservations, and so it attracts a mix of dedicated diners and those simply popping in throughout the day. In the evenings, Thyme tends to feel more like a restaurant and does become very busy and you may find yourself with a short wait. Thyme is popular with many local residents – generally young professionals – and passers-by, and also attracts visitors from across Sheffield.
The Food
Thyme Cafe is owned by the people behind the upmarket Artisan restaurant and is an attempt to render the same fine cuisine into the cafe format. Offerings are typical of cafe or bar food – burgers, salads, sandwiches, soups, plus cakes and pastries to accompany the coffee – but overall it’s very much more extravagant. Prices reflect that, with burgers at £9 and sandwiches and lighter bites at around £6. Thyme does offer more substantial options, such as steaks, pasta dishes and many alternating specials and the menu will easily stretch to providing a proper restaurant style meal, should that be what you’re looking for.
The Drink
Being a cafe Thyme offers a substantial range of teas and coffees which are very popular with its daytime clientele, while a good selection of bottled beers and a few draught lagers are also available. The wine selection is more akin to that of a restaurant and so are the prices.
The Last Word
An interesting experiment that delivers restaurant quality food in a cafe setting. If you’re willing to pay a little extra it’s a fine choice.
