The ViewSheffield Review
Pho 68 is located on Sheffield’s lively and multi-cultural London Road. Promoting itself as a Vietnamese cafe this really is one of the most interesting places to eat in Sheffield. Brilliant for a quick bite or an extended meal, Pho 68 offers traditional Vietnamese food and a huge menu. The VenueLondon Road is a hard place for a restaurant to succeed due to the sheer amount of competition. Despite being one of the newer establishments Pho 68 has fitted in nicely and is a welcome addition to the Sheffield food scene.
Pho 68 is a very open restaurant and has windows facing onto the street so you can watch the world outside while you enjoy your meal. The restaurant itself is bright and clean looking with traditional Vietnamese decorations. The seats aren’t particularly comfortable but the food more than makes up for this one down side.
The AtmospherePho 68 has a very welcoming atmosphere, and the staff are friendly and accommodating. As soon as you walk through the door someone will see you to a table and make sure you have a menu and a drink.
Perhaps one of the best indications of the quality of food on offer is the range of clientele Pho 68 attracts. Professionals and students eat here, as well as Vietnamese people, which is always a good sign. The kitchen is on display and you can watch your (and everyone else’s) food being cooked.
The decor is fairly bright and friendly and the whole restaurant is well lit. The only negative side to this is the fact people can see how much mess you’ve made slurping away at the bowls of noodles.
The FoodThis really is where Pho 68 stands out from its contemporaries. An extensive menu with a huge choice of vegetarian options makes Pho 68 a brilliant place to eat out with a large party, especially if you’re a vegetarian or are dining with veggies. They also have a good selection of steaks, a recommendation from the menu is the fillet steak with ginger and spring onions which is perfectly cooked and has a perfect combination of flavours to enhance the meat.
They provide chopsticks but for those of you who find these too complicated they’re not offended when you ask for a knife and fork or spoon. The hot and sour soup Vietnamese style is well worth a try: the soup has king prawns and a clean hot and sour flavour, the spices and flavours are just great together. There is such a wide variety on offer at Pho 68 that it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the menu but fear not, the staff are on hand to offer advice and will help you find the right choice for you.
The DrinkUnfortunately it is the drink selection that lets Pho 68 down a little. Granted they serve beer and wine but the selection is fairly poor and they only have one beer (Carling) on draught. There is a basic selection of spirits and bottled beer but in terms of drinks on offer it is a fairly small selection.
The Last WordSmall, friendly provider of excellent food, Pho 68 is a brilliant restaurant that is well worth a visit. It is particularly good if you’re trying to impress someone by sharing your knowledge of Sheffield restaurants.
