The ViewSheffield Review
La Luna offers an authentic taste of Italy in Sheffield. The romantic setting, excellent service and exceptional food will make it a night to remember.
The Venue
La Luna is located on Ecclesall Road in the Banner Cross area. Good transport links make this restaurant easily accessible. On arrival, you’ll enter straight into a small, cosy restaurant. The restaurant is set on two floors, although the upstairs section doesn’t have that much room so it is advisable to pre-book. There is a mixture of intimate tables for two and larger tables, although bookings for bigger groups may be harder to accommodate. It is only open during the evening, from 6pm-11pm daily.
Once settled at your table, you might even forget you’re in Sheffield as the tiled flooring, attractive decorations and candle-lit atmosphere gives it an authentic Mediterranean feel.
The Atmosphere
This restaurant appears very popular with a variety of clientele, whether they are simply dining out, celebrating a special occasion or having a romantic meal. The exposed brick walls have an air of rusticity but the modern tables and gleaming silver add a modern twist to this traditional restaurant. The warm and welcoming staff provide an efficient and friendly service while you dine. They are attentive, accommodating and seem to really know the menu back to front so you’ll be met with a knowledgeable answer should you need to know anything, such as special dietary requirements. The soft candle-lighting and roses on the table create a romantic ambience, where you can relax and dine in a pleasant atmosphere.
The Food
The speed of the service and quality of food, which is of a high standard, means you are in for a treat when you eat at La Luna. The menu offers a wide choice at a good price. Treat yourself to a selection of appetisers, including a selection of speciality breads which come with an olive oil dip. Team this with some olives to really get your taste buds flowing.
Highly recommended for a starter are the gamberoni prawns (£5.25), which melt in your mouth. Cooked in spicy tomato sauce and served with spinach leaves, these delicate prawns provide a delicious start to your meal.
The mains really demonstrate why this restaurant is worth a visit. The grilled beef fillet (£15.95) topped with dolce latte cheese and Parma ham, finished with red wine demiglace sauce, really excels. The beef is tender and flavoursome, and is perfectly complimented by the rich blue cheese and delicate Parma ham. Teamed with a selection of vegetables, the flavours all compliment each other and provide a sumptuous dinner. Also worth a mention is the appetising selection of pizzas available. Especially noticeable is the vegetarian calzone (£8.50). This folded pizza with mozzarella and a selection of vegetables has a really crisp, fresh texture, which is complimented by the soft, moist mozzarella.
If you have room to fit in a pudding, the desserts shouldn't be missed. The tiramisu (£3.95) is a great example of an Italian classic. The feathery cream texture mixed with a burst of coffee makes for a sublime end to dinner. Other desserts include the indulgent homemade mascarpone cheesecake.
The Drink
La Luna is a bring your own wine restaurant. This makes for an enjoyable night, which is easy on your wallet. Let the friendly staff uncork you’re bottle and feast under the candlelight. To their credit there’s no corkage charge.
The Last Word
This friendly little candlelit restaurant offers an authentic taste of Italy. The bring your own wine policy, and the freshly prepared, expertly-cooked Italian food makes this restaurant very popular. You’ll leave feeling happy after a good night out.
