A fusion of Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese food- East One has something for everyone. The VenueEast One, situated in the West One Complex, is in a prime position to attract diners. East One occupies two floors, with the seating area being made up of long tables and benches, meaning sometimes you sit with random people. Whilst some may not enjoy this experience, others will realise that its pretty standard for this type of venue.
The AtmosphereEast One is a popular choice for dining, both in the day and evening. Students frequent the restaurant on a daily basis, but families and older guests also choose to eat here. Though busy, the size of the restaurant prevents it from being too claustrophobic. The service is efficient, whilst staff are not always the friendliest, they get the job done with food and drinks arriving promptly.
The FoodThe menu is diverse, incorporating dishes from all areas of East Asia. The side dishes can be eaten as starters, and high praise must be given to the gyoza (£4.55), chicken dumplings served on a simple white dish, which melt in the mouth, and contrast well with the chilli, ginger and vinegar sauce. There are plenty of vegetarian and fish side dishes to choose from, with prices ranging from £2.25-£6.25.
The variety for main dishes is just as extensive, with options of salads, wok fried noodles, soup based noodles, sauce based noodles and rice dishes. The won ton soup (£6.95) is a firm favourite.
Whilst most dishes taste delightful and look appetising, the phad Thai (£7.95) is exceptional. Presented on a large white square dish, the aroma the dish gives off is mouthwatering, it mingles spice and sweetness. The crunchiness of the peanuts, followed by the softness of the egg and smoothness of the noodles is most enjoyable. All mains cost less than £10, so East One provides high-quality food at budget prices. In addition, lunch time menus are available which offer further discount value.
The DrinkWhilst wine is available, bottles cost £9.25-£15.95, East One provides a large choice of traditional drinks. Sake and traditional Japanese wine is available by the glass, and there is a considerable variety of Eastern beers. Favourites include Kirin (£3.55/pint), Tiger Beer (£2.75/bottle) and Asahi (£2.75/bottle.) The usual soft drinks are available, as well as a range of freshly squeezed juice (£3.55/pint), Japanese green tea (£1/cup) and Jasmine tea (85p/cup).
The Last WordFood from all over Southeast Asia is cooked to perfection here, the prices are cheap yet the standard is good.
