The ViewSheffield Review
Cubana is a wonderfully unique tapas restaurant that can be found Sheffield city centre, near the popular West Street. A lively and friendly atmosphere combined with an excellent menu and a great selection of drinks make this a must for anyone who enjoys authentic Spanish cuisine.
The Venue
This delightful restaurant is located in the city centre, which makes it a perfect place to start a night out and enjoy a meal. As you enter you will see the bar directly in front, with the restaurant area to the right. The bar area has open brickwork and wooden beams. The bar area also has high tables for people just visiting for a drink, something which adds to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the venue.
The tables are all quite close together but this gives Cubana a cosy rather than crowded feel. To complement this they have low lighting and each table also has a lit candle, which helps the general ambience. Due to its excellent reputation and popularity, it is necessary to book a table if you plan to eat at Cubana during busy hours, typically anytime after 6.30pm.
The Atmosphere
Cubana is a very lively restaurant. As soon as you walk through the door someone will come over to meet you and take you to a table. The staff are all very helpful and are willing to give you advice on your meal, along with the correct pronunciation if you happen to mispronounce dishes.
On busier nights Cubana may have a live band on, playing traditional music such as flamenco or salsa. They also hold Saturday afternoon salsa classes for beginners, improvers and advanced hip-shakers, so if you’re that way inclined you can combine a class with a drink or a bite to eat.
The Food
The food at Cubana is truly something special and is priced very reasonably: between four and six pounds for each dish. They also have a happy hour between 5pm and 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. If you’re unsure about how much to order they have put a guide on the back of the menu to help you decide.
The food itself is exquisite and it is easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer choice on offer. The albondigas are house speciality Spanish meatballs served in a tomato and red wine sauce. There is also a hint of coriander which lifts the whole dish. If seafood is more your thing, the langostinos al ajilo or the calamares a la Andaluza may appeal more. The langostinos are prawns cooked with white wine. The prawns are cooked to absolute perfection. The calamares is lightly fried squid and the batter is fresh and light as a feather. There are also plenty of vegetarian options.
The Drink
Cubana has a good selection of wine and beer but, with this restaurant having strong Cuban connections, it would be rude not to mention the rum and cocktails. They serve Havana Club rum, amongst others, and for those looking for a truly exclusive taste you can sample Havana’s 15 year old rum. It will set you back £5 a shot but this drink is worth every penny.
They have all the traditional cocktails on offer such as the Cuba Libre and Mojito. Their mojitos are made using just the right combination of mint, lime and sugar. You might even say they do some of the best mojitos in Sheffield, which is no small feat.
The Last Word
Cubana is definitely one of Sheffield’s finest restaurants and it is no wonder the place is so popular. It is an ideal venue for a quick drink and snack after work, thanks to their happy hour, or for a more formal meal later on. If you like tapas this restaurant is perfect for you and, if you’re yet to fall under the charms of tapas, it may just convince you.
