The ViewSheffield Review
A pub that’s steeped in tradition, but is showing its age.
The Venue
It’s likely you could go your entire life living in Sheffield not knowing where this pub was. Slap bang in the city centre; it is one of the very few remaining pubs of its calibre still remaining in the area. A modern city bar it is not. The decor is old, the place a bit tatty, but if you like a pub with character then this could be for you.
It feels like a pub that’s very stuck in its ways, but in an area so swamped with generic bars, it’s refreshing: the walls are filled with old pictures, a dart board is prominent in the front room and there’s a jukebox on the wall. There isn’t much else to look at other than a TV, but you don’t come to this kind of place for its furnishings and decor.
The People
The crowd is generally an older, more weathered crowd. This is certainly a place that is better suited to locals rather than students or bar hoppers. However, if you like a beer, a good jukebox and rock n roll DJs then this could be your place regardless.
The Drink
Again, it’s simple and understated: nothing fancy, just lagers and bitters. Offers include house doubles (vodka, whisky, white rum, gin) and a mixer (£2.55). Bottles of Jacques cider (£2.20) and bottles of VK (£2.20) offer alternatives, if the hard stuff don’t happen to be to your taste. On draft you’ll find an underwhelming mix of Kronenbourg (£2.75 a pint), Fosters, John Smiths Smooth (£2.40 a pint), Guinness and Strongbow. House wine is yours for £6.20 a bottle.
The Last Word
It might be rough round the edges but it’s a charming boozer that’s ideal for a crowd more at home in a traditional boozer than sleek surroundings.
