The ViewSheffield Review
Found on the fashionable Division Street, Bungalows and Bears is lively bar with an excellent location for evening and daytime drinks, alike.
The Venue
This spacious venue has a central bar with seated areas around the sides, as well as an interior balcony providing a two-tier effect. Furniture is a mismatch of large comfortable leather sofas, office chairs and beanbags, which helps to provide an informal, imaginative setting.
The random, individualistic decor is further reinforced with glitter balls, amusing newspaper clippings and photos of staff and regulars. A sense of fun is given through the rather odd theme of bungalows and bears that can be seen in the stuffed teddies and photographs of bungalows. The bar is, however, serious about its music with a set of decks on a raised platform hosting illustrious indie, electronic and genre-defying DJs from all over the UK.
The People
The innovative, fresh vibe of Bungalows and Bears attracts both young students and locals; this ensures it is usually packed on week nights and weekends. The bar staff are relaxed and friendly, whilst still providing fast, efficient service.
The Food
Food is served until 10pm, Sunday to Thursday, and until 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays. They provide a range of traditional pub classics, such as sausage and mash for a reasonable £5.50, home made burger and chips for £5.90, and there’s a two for £12 deal available on their Sunday roasts. They also provide a lighter option of sandwiches, starting from £3.90 for a roasted red pepper and goat’s cheese sandwich, served with home-made Maris Piper chips. The toasted bread compliments the mild, creamy
cheese which is set off by the sharp, tangy red pepper. The balance between the ingredients is spot on and the filing is generous, although a few more chips would be nice. On the whole, it is great value for money.
The Drink
Premium draught beers, such as Red Stripe, Amstel, Becks Vier and Peroni, range in price from £2.60-£3.20, and a modest variety of cocktails like the Silver Bullet and Mojito cost £5.50. The Mojito may set you back a few quid but it is certainly delicious and worth it if you want to treat yourself. Although sweet, the tangy zest of the lime works well with the Bacardi rum to give a nice kick to the drink, whilst the generous helping of mint leaves ensures a contradictory mellow, soft tone.
The Last Word
Bungalows and Bears is a kooky, fun place to chill out and hear DJ sets from some of the most interesting acts in town.
